How long does a motor rewind take, and what changes it

Turnaround is a scheduling answer, not a physics answer. Here is what genuinely takes time, what a workshop can compress when you pay for priority, and what you should be doing meanwhile.
What actually takes the time
- Getting the motor there
- Collection, or your own transport. For large machines this can be the longest single element, and it needs lifting arranged at both ends.
- Strip, test and quote
- Most workshops will not price properly until the motor is apart and tested, so there is a decision gap between arrival and work starting. Authorise quickly if you are in a hurry.
- Materials
- Common wire sizes and insulation are usually stocked. Unusual conductor sizes, form-wound coils and specialist insulation systems have to be ordered.
- Winding
- Hand work that scales with the size of the machine. This is where a large motor takes markedly longer than a small one.
- Impregnation and cure
- A fixed process time that cannot be rushed without compromising the result. Vacuum pressure impregnation takes longer than dip and bake.
- Mechanical work
- Bearings are quick. Shaft repair, housing repair and balancing are not, and they are often only discovered once the motor is apart.
- Test and paperwork
- Short, but skipping it removes the evidence that the repair is sound.
- Return and refitting
- Transport back, plus your own time to align, couple and recommission. Budget for it.
Buying speed
Priority turnaround is real and it is chargeable: workshops move a job to the front of the queue, work extended hours on it and sometimes buy materials at short notice. Ask for the standard turnaround and the priority turnaround as two separate quotes, with the premium stated, so you can decide whether the time is worth the money. If a spare is already running your plant, say so, because the cheaper standard slot is usually the right buy.
What to do while the motor is away
- Fit and run the spare if you have one, and put the rewind on standard turnaround.
- Ask whether a hire or exchange unit is available. Some workshops hold exchange stock in common frame sizes.
- Fix the cause. Check alignment, ventilation, supply balance, drive settings and anything that lets water or dust into the machine, so the rebuilt motor is not fed straight back into the same failure.
- Decide your strategic spares position. If this motor stopping cost you real production, holding a spare is usually cheaper than paying for priority turnaround every time.
We do not publish typical turnaround days here, because they depend on the workshop's current queue, the machine size and material availability, and a printed figure would be wrong more often than it was right. Ask for a committed date in writing, and ask what happens to it if extra mechanical work is found at strip-down.
